About Susan

My name is Susan Dargue and I have been a Registered Nurse working for over 20 years.

Throughout my nursing career I have developed a wide range of transferable skills and a wealth of experience. I have worked in a variety of settings and have expanded my knowledge and clinical skills through both training within the clinical environment and educational establishments.

I have completed my training and practical experience in micro-suction and am able to offer this as a mobile service to Rest Homes, Retirement Villages and Care facilities across Canterbury having purchased the business from the previous provider.

What is micro-suction

Micro-suction is a technique for removing ear wax or debris using specialised magnification loupes (similar to the type dentists use). This allows the ear canal to be examined in detail.  A very fine sterile suction device at low pressure is used to remove the wax.

There are a variety of reasons why micro-suction is superior compared to the traditional forms of wax removal (e.g. ear syringing or irrigation, ear drops):

  • Safer
  • Faster
  • Better tolerated
  • More effective
  • Does not require weeks of waiting for drops to soften the wax, usually 1-2 days of olive oil use is sufficient

It is extremely important to remember that due to its protective properties, a thin layer of wax left on the lining of the ear canal following procedures such as micro-suction, is extremely beneficial.  The aim of wax removal treatments is not to completely eliminate ear wax.

About Earwax

Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance in the ears. Ear wax cleans, lubricates and protects the lining of the ear by trapping dirt and repelling water.  It is slightly acidic and has antibacterial properties.  Without ear wax, the skin inside your ear would become dry, cracked, infected or waterlogged and sore.

The amount and type of ear wax produced is genetically determined just like hair colour or height. Some people have ear canals that are smaller than average or shaped in a way that makes it difficult for the naturally occurring wax to get out of the canal causing wax to build up and harden. Impacted wax can create a blockage called a ‘plug’. Wax plugs can cause hearing loss, discomfort, itching or tinnitus.  Once the blockage is removed, your hearing will improve.

Ear Wax Blockage Symptoms

  • Pain in the ear
  • A feeling of unwanted fullness in the ear
  • Constant ringing noise in the ear
  • Less hearing ability in the affected ear
  • Cough
  • Dizziness

Cost

  • $50 per person for 6 or more people
  • $65 per person for 2 people
  • $80 per person for 1 person
  • $30 per person for any follow up visits

What to Expect !

  1. First, we will discuss your problem with you and then explain the procedure.
  2. We will then gently examine your ear canal using a special microscope.
  3. Then while looking down your ear canal with the microscope we will use a tiny vacuum cleaner to clear the blockage.
  4. Finally, we will use the microscope to check the condition of your ear drum and let you know how the procedure went.
